Education is something that has become a basic necessity for anyone who wishes to survive happily, it is no longer that ‘may’ be given to a person, but something that ‘has’ to be given. Every individual has the right to education and hence, it is upon the institutions that impart education to take care in making education available to one and all in the best way possible.
There is an utmost requirement of the present education system to undergo a metamorphosis for the sake of the students. This is what exemplary teachers and education experts like Douglas Reeves emphasize. He is the author of several books on education reform and assessment patterns. He has the wide range of knowledge as well as experience because he has taught students of all ages, whether of elementary school or doctorate level.
In fact, he himself has acquired his doctorate and is the founder of Creative Leadership Solutions. Driven by his passion for teaching, he still teaches while working on his various authorial tasks simultaneously, such as writing for the ASCD Express and American School Board Journal.
The words relief, recovery and reform ring a bell in our ears, and we recall these words being used politically during the reign of Franklin Roosevelt. But in the present day scenario too, these three words turn out to be the basis to understanding the way to handle students universally. Let’s take the terms separately.
The Relief referred to by Roosevelt was with regard to the people who were suffering at that time, but today we could connect it to the students who are suffering from lack of understanding and hence falling behind the flock. The second word, Recovery, in the past it referred to recovering the economic condition and making it prosperous and grow. In the present times, it refers to the arrangements that need to be made to help our children grow in the proper, suitable education ambiance, at the same time instilling in them the required values for life.
The final word, reform, refers to changes both in the past and in the present. However, in the present it speaks about the changes that should be incorporated into the education system making sure at the same time that the previous mistakes shall not be repeated.
Dr. Douglas Reeves, the author of more than 30 books on education reform and assessment conforms to these three things and believes that relief can be provided to the students only after the student and his/ her problem area is identified. Recovery can be given by entertaining and engaging the students, as one of the fundamentals elements of teaching.
The reform can be made visible only when teachers conduct an analysis and assessment of their own teaching methods and techniques regularly, and make improvisations continuously, suiting the requirements of the students. But this reform cannot be done by the teachers all by themselves, they need the support of the parents constantly. The parents are the greatest assets for the teachers, they are the ones who will be able to guide the teachers carefully by giving them genuine feedback about the students.
So, in order to make better the education system, let’s not just dump it on the administrators but take it upon ourselves as parents to help the teachers, help our children.
